An Amtrak train smashed into a Toyota Prius near San Diego International Airport, but the car’s driver had escaped moments before impact and was uninjured, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported Saturday.
The crash occurred at the Sassafras Street crossing, across from the rental car facility, when a northbound Amtrak train going 35 to 45 miles per hour struck the Prius, which was stopped on the railroad tracks.
“The female driver of the Prius had safely exited the Prius prior to the collision,” the sheriff’s department said. “No injuries were reported.”
Deputies were dispatched to the crash location about 9 p.m. Friday.
Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the sheriff’s department non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
