A new poll released Tuesday by Public Opinion Strategies shows Rep. Darrell Issa with a 14 percent lead in his bid for election to a 9th term in Congress.
The survey of 400 likely voters, including 120 on cell phones, showed Issa leading his Democratic challenger Doug Applegate by 52 percent to 38 percent. The margin of error in the poll is 5 percent.
“The poll shows that the Democrats’ hopes for an upset have largely been overplayed,” said Issa campaign spokesman Calvin Moore. “Voters know Congressman Issa well and are confident in his proven record of leadership.”
Two weeks ago, a poll by the Applegate campaign showed him to be in a statistical dead heat with Issa, who was at 45 percent to his challenger’s 42 percent in the race to represent the 49th Congressional District. The district encompasses north San Diego and south Orange counties.
The Democratic Party has targeted Issa, believing him to be vulnerable in the November election because of his support for Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Applegate is a retired Marine colonel and trial attorney, Issa a successful entrepreneur who achieved national notice as chairman of the House Oversight Committee.
