Authorities on Monday released the name of a 33-year-old Los Angeles County man who leaped out of a moving car on Interstate 5 in Oceanside over the weekend and was fatally struck by another vehicle.

Gerardo Miranda of Cudahy was heading north with family members when he opened a passenger door and jumped out near Mission Avenue shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Miranda then walked into a traffic lane on the freeway and was hit by a pickup truck. Medics took him to Tri-City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
