Amazon on Wednesday announced an expansion of its San Diego technology hub and plans to create 300 new jobs in software development, machine learning, cloud computing and digital entertainment.
The Seattle-based e-commerce giant opened a new 85,000-square-foot office on Campus Point Drive in University City. The expansion will allow the company to more than double its tech workforce in the area.
“Amazon is excited to create more tech jobs in San Diego — a city with terrific talent and a culture of innovation,” said Nate Wiger, general manager of Amazon’s new San Diego office. “We look forward to more than doubling our investment in the area, and hiring local talent to fill exciting roles across Amazon.”
Amazon’s San Diego hub is one of 17 in North America outside of Seattle that together employ over 17,500. The teams in San Diego develop software for AmazonFresh, Prime Now and Amazon Web Services as wells as supply chain technology and fraud protection.

Together with its multiple customer fulfillment facilities, Amazon has created more than 39,000 jobs in California.
Amazon’s San Diego expansion is the brainchild of Nate Wiger, a UC San Diego graduate who proposed the idea in 2016 while working at Amazon’s Irvine office. He is now the general manager of the San Diego office.
Amazon leased the office space for the Tech Hub last September.
