The Pointer football team is currently undefeated with a record of 4-0 going into Week 5 of
the season and 14-0 in regular season games dating back to last year.
But for the team’s coaches, there remains room for improvement. The key word for Point Loma head coach Ryan Price is “consistency.”
“We weren’t as consistent tonight as I would have liked,” he said after his team beat a highly
motivated and previously unbeaten Grossmont team 28-20. “It doesn’t have to be perfect,
but we want the players to be consistent. This is the trend of a younger team that doesn’t
necessarily have lots of experience. But finding a way to win (tonight) with all the crazy stuff
that happened is big so I don’t take that lightly. A win is a win.”
Grossmont started the scoring in last week’s game, putting up 14 points in the second quarter
and carrying a 14-10 lead into halftime. But the Dogs came to life in the third quarter,
outscoring the Foothillers 11-0 to take a 21-14 lead in the third quarter.
Late in the third quarter an offensive pass interference against the Foothillers was followed
by the Pointers blocking a punt and taking over on the Grossmont 27-yard line.
On the first play of the final quarter, sophomore TE Leo Ramenofsky, alone in the end zone,
caught a 10-yard pass for the final Dog score. But the Foothillers took the ensuing kickoff and marched down the field to score. With a missed two-point conversion they pulled to within eight with 7:53 still left to play.
The Pointers drove to the Grossmont 10-yard line before stalling. Ryan Cleator came on for
what normally is a chip shot, but his field goal attempt was blocked and the Foothillers
began another possession with 1:39 left to play.
A long pass attempt by the Foothillers resulted in a collision between the intended receiver
and a Dog defender and a loose ball. Referees ruled a completed pass and fumble
recovered by the Pointers with just 13 seconds left, sealing the Point Loma win.
For the game, the Pointers logged 379 yards of offense including 201 through the air and
178 on the ground. Other Dog scores: a 27-yard run by junior Nick Lemus and a
dramatic second quarter punt return of 66 yards by junior Blake Lingard.
Cleator, a senior, also had a big game with a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter that
followed a pass interception at the goal line that he returned 40 yards. He also kicked two
PAT’s and put most of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks that prevented returns.
He scored eight of his team’s total points.
Against La Jolla on Sept. 4, the Pointers kept “The Shoe” for the third consecutive year, spanking the Vikings 52-25 on the loser’s field. The Dogs totaled 569 yards in offense, 407 through the air and 152 on the ground.
Quarterback Ryder Watson completed 80% of his throws for four touchdowns to four different receivers, including Tanner Spradling (six total catches for 172 yards), Graham Murdock, Aiden Walsh and Cleator.
Watson also ran for two additional scores along with touchdowns from Isaiah Standley and
Lemus.
Defensively, MJ Fowler had 10 solo tackles followed by Colton Fannin (9), Levi Evering (7),
Jonathan Fenick, AJ Carrillo, Luke Gustafson and Walsh (6 each). Fannin and Brady Wagner
each had a sack and Fenick had a pass interception. Six of Cleator’s nine kickoffs went for touchbacks.
Extra points
Every Pointer team is undefeated with the JV shutting out La Jolla (40-0) and Grossmont
(34-0). The former “freshman” team is now the “novice” team because first-year freshmen, sophomores and juniors are eligible. The PL novice team defeated Mater Dei Catholic (38-7) and Grossmont (47-8) … Pointer players observed the 25th anniversary of 9/11 in a pregame ceremony when they presented veterans and a San Diego firefighter on hand with flags from each branch of the service plus a POW/MIA flag … After homecoming, the Dogs travel to Ramona for a Sept. 25 game followed by the annual bye week. Play resumes Oct. 9 with a final non-league game at Scripps Ranch.
