POINT LOMA – After going undefeated during last year’s regular season, Point Loma’s football team was moved back to the Western League by the San Diego Section of CIF.
The move was to allow the team to compete against a pair of private schools who are immune to public school rules and to actively recruit players.
Is this annual re-leaguing by CIF a reward?
Hardly. Public high schools must re-create rosters annually as senior players graduate. There are up and down years for everyone. But CIF moves teams up after good years and down after poor years, an action that simply doesn’t reflect what talent these schools will have next year.
For the Pointers, an 11-1 overall record (10-0 in the Eastern League) meant a bump up to once again play in a league with Cathedral Catholic, Lincoln, and Mission Bay (10-1 in City League). Dropped from the Western League of 2025 were Scripps Ranch (7-6), St. Augustine (5-7), and University City (6-6).
This leaves the Western League in a rare situation with only four teams. If four-team leagues are approved by CIF, the time has come to start a Super League with the private (recruiting) schools left to slug it out annually. These teams should be Cathedral Catholic, St. Augustine, Mater Dei Catholic and one or more perennial powers such as Mission Hills, Carlsbad or Lincoln.
The Pointers begin the season with a 117-mile ride to face strong Leuzinger High School in Lawndale. The Olympians went 11-2 last year, scoring 40 or more points in six of those wins.
