The 21st Annual Battle of the Badges is going on this Saturday night aboard the historic USS Midway, the world-famous floating fortress and one of San Diego’s most iconic landmarks.

The Battle of the Badges is a charity boxing event that helps raise funds for the Community Youth Athletic Center out of National City. CYAC, which partners with the National Latino Peace Officers Association, says it aspires to give back to the youth in the San Diego community by providing life-changing programs.

The location of the event is special in its own right, but what truly makes it spectacular is the presence of the people who will be stepping into the ring. Local law enforcement, first responders, and military personnel will be going toe-to-toe right on the flight deck.

One of the main events of the night features a rematch from last year between National City Police Officer Christina Soto and San Diego Police Officer Krystle Jordan.

Soto was victorious in their first bout and is seeking another victory this Saturday.

“It almost feels surreal, it feels fake,” Soto said. “Think about the history of that ship and what that ship has seen, what it has gone through. To be a part of something so historical… to stand for something that is way bigger than all of us.”

The event honors first responders — while directly giving back to the communities they serve.

“We know a lot of our kids come from economically challenged homes, so in the back we have computers, tutors and they are able to come in and do their homework, said CYAC’s executive director Clemente Casillas. “We’ve had kids that become national champions, we probably have more kids graduating from universities.”
