POINT LOMA – Could Point Loma High’s baseball team soon have a “dynasty” label attached to it?

The Pointers are currently working to earn a third straight CIF championship after winning Div. II in 2024 and Div. I in 2025, both under head coach Rigo Ledezma.

Can the Dogs do it again?

After one month of pre-season play, the Pointers have a 6-4-1 record as they underwent a brutal four games in four days schedule this week in the annual Lions Tournament. The event, the longest-running and largest high school baseball event in the U.S., was founded in 1951 by Mike Morrow and Les Cassie. This year’s 121 teams come from across the country and Canada, competing in nine divisions.

After opening the season ranked among the county’s top 10 teams, the Pointers fell out of the list before returning to the No. 10 overall spot this week, and No. 8 in Div. I.

Senior catcher Hunter Reddeg leads hitters with a .552 batting average (16 for 29), followed by seniors Ace Selchow (.417), Caden Williams (.355), sophomore Nico Quintero (.348), and junior Wyatt Olson (.323). The team batting average is .299.

Reddeg, Williams, and Quintero have each hit home runs to date, while doubles leaders are Reddeg and Olson (tied at four) with sophomore Landon Palmer and Williams (tied at three). Selchow and junior Murphy Sheridan are the only players to hit triples.

On the mound, the team carries a 4.42 earned run average, a number coaches would like to see drop. Sophomore Wyatt Smith leads with a 1.91 ERA over 7.1 innings pitched.

Overall, opposing batters are hitting at a .261 rate. With 42 walks issued and 24 batters hit by pitches, 66 runners have been given free passes, contributing to 18 unearned runs.

Fielders have been error-free on 309 of 325 chances, a .951 success rate.

By comparison, the 2024 team was 6-3-2 after 11 games, and the 2025 team was 9-2, both of which went on to CIF title seasons. While Ledezma and his assistants are experts at teaching and refining the focus and skills of their players, they also know that anything can happen.

As Ledezma says, “Hey, it’s baseball!”

Extra innings

The Pointers’ league season begins April 15. Other Western League members include Cathedral Catholic, St. Augustine, University City, Patrick Henry, and Coronado. The teams play Wednesday-Friday, with home-and-away games against each other.
