Los Angeles and El Segundo are set to host the 2026 Global Esports World Finals Games with the Los Angeles Times Media Group serving as a host partner, it was announced Tuesday.
During a news conference at the Los Angeles Times, representatives of the Global Esports Federation said the two cities were chosen over eight other international cities. The media group is expected to refurbish a warehouse adjacent to the Times building that will serve as an arena where all the action will take place.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 4, 2026, marking the first time the games will be hosted in the United States. Previous championships have been held in Singapore, Instanbul, Riyadh, Brimingham and Lima.
Patrick Soon-Shiong, executive chairman and CEO of the L.A. Times Media Group, said with less than three years until the Olympic and Paralympic Games the city is alive with anticipation.
“Esports adds to that momentum, bringing its global energy and uniting gaming, sport and a new wave of entertainment. Los Angeles Times Media Group is proud to help anchor this milestone event for our city and the world.”
GEF is a non-governmental organization that convenes the world’s esports community with its flagship event, featuring multi-title competitions with thousands of competitors.
“We are adding yet another major international event to the lineup, showing that Los Angeles is where the world comes to compete in every form, from the field to the arena to the digital stage,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said.
In 2026, the L.A. region is expected to host eight games of the World Cup, followed by the 2027 Super Bowl and the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028.
