File it under all good things come to an end. The Padres fell to the Cubs 2-1 in extra innings Tuesday for the Friars’ first loss in 12 home games.
The setback also ended a 5-game win streak.
Nico Hoerner’s opposite-field liner off Yuki Matsui (0-1) to lead off the 10th inning drove in automatic runner Dansby Swanson.
The Padres didn’t go quietly. They had runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the 10th and the Cubs intentionally walked red-hot Fernando Tatis Jr.
Caleb Thielbar got three-time batting champion Luis Arraez instead, and the gambit worked. Arraez flied out to left.
Ryan Pressley (1-1) earned the win in the matchup of NL division leaders.
The Padres scored first when the Cubs gave Manny Machado one too many chances to hurt them. The slugger homered after a nine-pitch at-bat against Shota Imanaga in the fifth.

Machado fouled off six pitches during the two-out at-bat, including one down the right field line that Kyle Tucker dropped and a high pop behind home plate that third baseman Gage Workman couldn’t snag.
Then Machado made Imanaga pay, driving a 92-mph fastball to left-center for his second homer.
The Cubs tied it in the sixth on two singles and two sacrifice bunts, with Pete Crow-Armstrong notching an RBI.
Padres starter Randy Vásquez went five innings, allowing one run and seven hits. Imanaga allowed four hits in his five innings, striking out seven and walking three.
The Padres had the bases loaded with one out in the third and an inning later, two on with one out. Yet they couldn’t score.
“We had some chances early on to put them away and we didn’t,” Machado said.
The Padres also took part in the annual Jackie Robinson Day, when baseball honors the late pioneer who broke the color barrier in 1947. On social media, the club wrote simply, “Today, we honor the life and legacy of Jackie Robinson and his impact on the game of baseball.”
Padres right-hander Nick Pivetta (2-1, 1.59 ERA) is set to take on Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd (1-1, 1.59 ERA) in the series finale Wednesday.
