The Padres‘ Jake Cronenworth joined Jackson Merrill on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a right rib fracture.

The IL stint for Cronenworth was made retroactive to Wednesday. He left Tuesday night’s game after taking a swing. He was hit by a pitch Sunday in a win against the Cubs.

“It’s frustrating, but it happens,” said Cronenworth, who initially thought he just had bruised ribs. “It didn’t feel great Sunday when it happened, even Monday, then water over the boat on Tuesday and kind of just the tip of the iceberg.”

Third baseman Tyler Wade was promoted from Triple-A El Paso before Friday’s game. Cronenworth is batting .257 with two homers and five RBIs in 12 games this season.

The Friars did get some good news Friday when star Fernando Tatis Jr. returned to the lineup to leadoff and play right field in the opener of a weekend series against Colorado at Petco Park. He left Tuesday’s game against the Athletics after experiencing shoulder discomfort.

He was a standout Friday, as he scored two runs and hit a solo homer in a 8-0 win over the Rockies.

The Friars did the bulk of their damage in the fifth inning, when they broke a scoreless tie by sending 12 men to the plate. They put six runs on the board, including two driven in by Elias Díaz, whose single brought in Jose Iglesias and Jason Heyward.

Iglesias also had two RBIs on the night, while Nick Pivetta gave up three hits over seven innings to improve to 2-1.

Kyle Hart takes the mound for the Padres in the second game of the series, against Chase Dollander at 5:40 p.m. Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Padres sent left-handed reliever Tom Cosgrove to the Cubs for cash considerations.

The 28-year-old Cosgrove was 1-0 with a 7.36 ERA in four appearances with Triple-A El Paso this season. He is 1-3 with a 3.95 ERA and one save in 72 major league relief appearances since his debut in 2023.

Cosgrove appeared in 18 games for the Padres last season and was 0-1 with a 11.66 ERA.
