The San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets 7-0 Friday, evening up the series at one game apiece.
The Padres didn’t waste any time getting Thursday’s loss out of their system, as designated hitter Luis Arraez hit a lead-off home run to put San Diego up 1-0 one batter in.
San Diego added three more runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from catcher Kyle Higashioka.
Arraez and Higashioka were the offensive stars of the night, both driving in another run in the third inning to stretch San Diego’s lead to 6-0.
A lead that large was more than enough for the Padres pitching. Starter Joe Musgrove struck out nine batters over his seven innings pitched, and he didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning, which was one of the Mets two baserunners on the night.
The Padres and Mets have traded blowout wins to start the series, and the next two games could help further shape the National League wild card playoff picture. With the win, the Padres moved up to five and a half games ahead of the Mets in the standings.
