San Diego Yacht Club’s Cameron Schnoor placed first in the 2024 Junior Sabot Nationals that took place last week. Cameron has sailed with the SDYC Program for multiple years, and sails with SDYC member Dave Vieregg.
“He put a 2 and a 1 on the board on the last two races, sailed consistently and didn’t make any mistakes,” said Vieregg via a press release. “He did wonderfully and is very deserving of the title of National Champion.”
Cameron finished second in race 5, then ran away with a victory in the final race. Sean Kaseburg (MBYC) finished second, and Will Ramsay (NHYC) finished third following his 2023 championship to round out the Golf fleet.
The Silver fleet saw Loki Barrett (MBYC) finish first, the Bronze first place finisher was Hudson Perich (SDYC), and the Iron fleet first place finisher was Ruckus Choate (BYC).
This was the first time since 1962 that the La Playa Basin, just in front of SDYC, hosted the Junior Sabot Nationals. Naples Sabot Class Secretary Jerelyn Biehl was excited to host.
“I don’t think that we have ever had racing this close to the docks,” said Biehl. “La Playa is unique with its theater-style viewpoints where you can watch from three different angles. It gave parents the ability to cheer them on from the docks, which were about 50 feet from the start and finish line.”
Two more prestigious awards handed out are the Jessica Uniack Memorial Trophy, given to the outstanding junior sportsman, and the Peggy Lenhart Perpetual Trophy, given to the most improved junior sailor from the previous nationals. The sportsman award went to Madeline Perich (SDYC) and the most improved went to Charlie Krause (NHYC).
