For Bryce Wettstein, it’s all connected.
Recording in the music studio. Studying with classmates at MiraCosta College. Practicing ballet at the YMCA. And oh, yeah, chasing Olympic gold in Paris.
“College helps me be a better skateboarder. Skateboarding allows me to express myself and continue being creative through music, and both skateboarding and music make me appreciate the knowledge I’m gaining in the classroom,” she said.
Wettstein will compete in the Women’s Skateboarding Park prelims and finals early Tuesday.
Growing up in Encinitas, Wettstein, 20, excelled academically, athletically and creatively. At the age of five, she started skateboarding at the YMCA and as she grew older, her talents flourished, setting the stage for her career.
In just the past few years, she has traveled across the globe and stood on podiums at a wide variety of national and international skateboarding championships – for instance she scored a bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Games.
And this summer, she will once again represent Team USA. She first did so in Tokyo, where she finished sixth.
Wettstein’s personality and creativity have resonated with fans and fellow athletes alike, making her a popular figure in the skateboarding community.
No matter how busy her life gets, she applies the same amount of energy and attention to her other passions, including music and academics. In fact, she half-seriously, half-jokingly admitted that she was trying to find a way to fit in work from a couple of MiraCosta classes while competing in Paris. She is studying social psychology.
“I love being able to embrace so many things,” she said. “And I’m grateful for all these opportunities right now in life.”
