The Padres fell 1-0 Wednesday, despite a sterling effort by starter Michael King.
King took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, broken up by Milwaukee shortstop Willy Adames. The next inning, second baseman Brice Turang singled and stole second. King struck out Jackson Chourio for the second out and gave way for Wandy Peralta, but centerfielder Blake Perkins singled off the lefty to bring in Turang.
The lone run held up for the Brewers, who salvaged a win in the closing game of the three-game series despite King’s 10 strike-out performance.
“He threw a great ballgame,” manager Mike Shildt told MLB.com. “It was tough not to win.”
The Padres had five hits on a bullpen day for Milwaukee, but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, particularly painfully in their half of the seventh. Manny Machado led off with a single, only to have Ha-Seong Kim ground into a double play. Jackson Merrill followed with a triple, but was stranded at third after a Tyler Wade fly ball to center.
Meanwhile, the Padres will be without Yu Darvish, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to neck tightness. Jake Cronenworth also missed the last two games in Milwaukee with leg soreness, but Shildt told MLB.com that “we’re hopeful that it won’t be a long-term situation.”
The team also said goodbye to reliever Pedro Avila, trading him to Cleveland for cash
He went 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA in four games this season.
After an off-day, the Padres make a quick stop at home to welcome the Toronto Blue Jays. Matt Waldron will take the mound Friday and Joe Musgrove Sunday. Saturday is TBD; Darvish had been set for that start.
