Nearly a decade after his passing, the memory of Padres icon Tony Gwynn continues to live on in San Diego, especially this weekend when his alma mater hosts the baseball tournament named for him.

The ninth annual Tony Gwynn Legacy begins Friday with games being played at both San Diego State and co-host UC San Diego.

The tournament features the hosts, Cal State Bakersfield, Loyola Marymount, Missouri and Utah.

The Aztecs. wrapping up their first week of action, bring a 1-3 record to the tournament. They face Missouri Friday, Bakersfield on Saturday and Utah on Sunday.

Each game is set for 6 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The UCSD Tritons play Utah at 6 p.m. Friday, Missouri in a double-header that begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and Loyola Marymount at 4 p.m. Sunday at Triton Ballpark. Utah and Cal State Bakersfield also will play on UCSD’s field, at noon Sunday.

SDSU heads into the tournament fresh off a 7-5 loss at home against Cal State University Northridge.

Freshman outfielder Jacob McCombs leads the Aztecs with five RBIs after hitting a
grand slam in the losing effort against CSUN. Another outfielder, Jake Jackson, a Madison High grad, was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week after hitting .250 with a
homer, four RBIs and four runs.

The Tritons, at 3-1, are led by right-hander Ryan Forcucci, who set the program’s Division 1 single game record with 11 strikeouts in UCSD’s Feb. 16 season opener. He also was named Big West Pitcher of the Week.

UCSD pitchers had a strong opening weekend, striking out 36 over three games and holding San Jose State to a .183 team batting average on the way to sweeping the Spartans.
