The U.S. defeated Canada in a CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal game in Cincinnati Sunday, with the winner set to move for a match at Snapdragon Stadium.

The U.S. advanced to the Gold Cup semifinal, 3-2 on penalty kicks after the teams ended up tied 2-2 after regulation and extra time.

Snapdragon will host the U.S. match against Panama, a 4-0 winner over guest team Qatar in another quarterfinal, at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The championship will be played July 16 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

This is the second meeting between the U.S. and Canada’s men’s teams in 22 days. The U.S. defeated the Reds, 2-0, June 18 in the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League final in Paradise, Nevada, improving to 17-10-12 all-time against Canada.

The U.S. advanced to the quarterfinals of the biennial international men’s soccer championship of the North, Central American and Caribbean region by winning Group A with a 2-0-1 record, outscoring its opponents 13-1.

Canada was second in Group D with a 1-0-2 record, tying Guadeloupe and Guatemala in its first two games, then defeating Cuba, 4-2.

The U.S. is 11th in the rankings compiled by FIFA, soccer’s international governing body. The U.S. roster consists of 17 players who play in MLS, two each in England and Italy and one each in Mexico and Netherlands.

Canada is ranked 45th. The Reds’ roster consists of 10 players who play in Major League Soccer, two who play in Scotland and one each in Mexico and various European countries.

U.S. defender DeAndre Yedlin and Canada defender Kamal Miller are teammates with MLS’ Inter Miami CF while U.S. forward Julian Gressel plays with Canada midfielder Ali Ahmed for MLS’ Vancouver Whitecaps.

 Jesús Ferreira has led the way for the U.S. with two hat tricks in the team’s group wins over Saint Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago.
