The San Diego Wave fell to the Chicago Red Stars 1-0 Saturday evening at SeatGeek Stadium.
San Diego dominated the first half, with the first chance coming in the 17th minute. Midfielder Rachel Hill took on the Chicago defense and put a shot on frame that hit off the post to keep the game level.
In the 41st minute, Wave midfielder Makenzy Doniak, a former Red Stars player, made it 1-0, scoring from close range following a set piece.
However, following a VAR review, the goal was called offside.
Just before the halftime whistle, Chicago’s Ella Stevens cut through the Wave’s backline inside the box and received a cross from Tatumn Milazzo, heading the ball into the bottom right corner to earn a lead into the break.
San Diego added eight more shots in the second half for a total of 15, but neither the Wave nor Chicago were able to find the back of the net before the final whistle, ending with a final score of 1-0.
San Diego’s NWSL team comes home to Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday, July 8, to host the Washington Spirit. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. and will air on Paramount+ and be broadcast live on FOX 5 San Diego.
