The Padres salvaged the final game of their four-game set in San Francisco Thursday, and in grand style, pounding the Giants 10-0.
Blake Snell continued his month-long hot streak, while the Friars, led by Gary Sánchez and Manny Machado – each hit three-run home runs – ended the Giants’ 10-game win streak.
Ha-Seong Kim added a solo shot and Nelson Cruz drove in the final two runs with a fifth-inning double. Sánchez went 3-for-5 on the day and scored two runs too.
Of course, the final three wins of the Giants’ streak came at the expense of the Padres, who in pursuit of reaching the .500 mark, had taken three series in a row before heading to the Bay Area.
But Snell stopped the Giants’ in their tracks, going six, striking out 11 and giving up just three hits. In so doing, he landed himself in the Padre record books.
He and one-time Padre ace Jake Peavy are now the only Friars to have struck out 11 batters or more in three consecutive games, MLB.com reported. Peavy did it in 2007, the year he won the Cy Young Award.
“Today was pretty special, with all four pitches working,” manager Bob Melvin told MLB.
The team returns home to welcome the Washington Nationals to Petco Park in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it home stand. Joe Musgrove will take the mound Friday, followed by Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo.
