The San Diego Wave fell 2-1 to Angel City at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps a five-game undefeated streak for San Diego’s NWSL team.

After an even score heading into the second half, defender Kristen McNabb broke the deadlock for the home side in the 57th minute. Forward Alex Morgan found the defender, who then struck a perfect ball from outside the box to put the Wave up by one.

McNabb scored her first goal of the 2023 season. Attendance was 25,515.

However, less than 10 minutes later, Angel City defender Paige Nielsen leveled the score 1-1 with a corner kick goal. In the 88th minute, Mary Alice Vignola doubled the away team’s score to earn the three points on the road for Los Angeles (3-6-3, 12 points).

Midfielder Emily van Egmond earned her first appearance since April 23 following a back injury.

“I thought we handled their attack really well in the first half,” said Wave coach Casey Stoney, “and then in the second half, we just seemed to lose energy and we didn’t keep the ball well enough.”

San Diego (6-4-2, 20 points) hosts OL Reign Saturday, June 24, at Snapdragon Stadium. The match is the club’s annual Pride Night, presented by Queen Yasmine Law, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
