Some of the world’s best golfers, including top-ranked Jon Rahm, face off at the $7.5 million Farmers Insurance Open in La Jolla beginning Wednesday.

He will be joined at the Torrey Pines Golf Course by a field that includes Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, San Diego native Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau, as well as defending champion Patrick Reed.

The tournament opens at 9 a.m. Wednesday on the North and South courses. On Friday and Saturday, action shifts to the South Course only.

In addition, four of the top finishers from the tournament that precedes the Farmers Open, the $7.6 million American Express PGA stop in La Quinta, will hit the links at Torrey Pines. Hudson Swafford surged on the final day Sunday, winning by two strokes over Tom Hoge.

Swofford, after a difficult 2021, met the media after his win, calling his play “unbelievable this week.”

Lanto Griffin and Lee Hodges, two of the three golfers who tied for third Sunday, are also in the Farmers Open field.

Rahm, from Spain, finished at 14-under at the Amex tournament, and tied for 14th. He won the Farmers Open in 2017.

Another San Diego native, Phil Mickelson, will play in La Jolla after missing the cut in La Quinta, coming in next-to-last at 7-over 151, following a 1-over 73 in the second round.

Tickets remain for the weekend –as fans are again welcome for the event after being left out last year due to the pandemic – with admission starting at $75. The Golf Channel and CBS will broadcast the tournament.

Since 1952’s the San Diego Open, the region has been home to an annual PGA Tour event each year. The 2017 Tournament marks the 56th time the event has been held at the Torrey Pines course.
