It’s the third week this season the Aztecs (15-4, 9-3 in Mountain West) have held a spot in the AP poll and the first time since Dec. 14. They are the only team in the conference in the rankings as they head into their Thursday game with Fresno State (9-7, 7-7).
The Aztecs own a 64-56 series advantage over Fresno State and swept both games last season. In Fresno, the Bulldogs have a 33-22 advantage, although the Aztecs have won six of the 10 contests against their opponent at the Save Mart Center.
San Diego State though, is on a six-game stretch of beating teams by at least 22 points. During the win streak, the Aztecs have ranked second in the nation in scoring margin, +29.8.
“If we can get into the 70s, it will probably be enough to win,” said head coach Brian Dutcher in a news conference earlier this week.
Jordan Schakel also was named MW Player of the Week after averaging 23.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in a last week’s wins over San Jose State. He’s the only player in the conference to receive the honor twice this season.
San Diego State is the only school to earn the honor three times this year – Matt Mitchell received the first award of the season.
Mitchell credited Schackel for being “in his rhythm, catching his stride at the end of the season.”
Schakel though, downplayed the honor to focus on the team.
“We know we just have to keep winning,” he said. “We got here by winning games. We just gotta keep doing that.”
SDSU begins its two-game series at Fresno State at 7 p.m. Thursday. They meet again at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Both games will air on CBS Sports Network.
