Three-time major championship winner Jordan Spieth joins the starry field of golfers who have committed to the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open, beginning in one week.
The field includes 23 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings and 16 players among the top 30 in the 2020-21 FedExCup points standings.
There are also seven past Farmers Insurance Open winners committed – including Phil Mickelson, a San Diego native, Marc Leishman, who won last year and Scott Stallings, the 2014 winner – as well as 12 players who have accounted for 25 major championship victories.
Spieth is an 11-time winner on the PGA Tour. He has played in three Ryder Cups and three Presidents Cups and will make his sixth appearance in the Farmers Insurance Open. His best performance was a top-20 finish in 2014.
Other recent additions to the Farmers Insurance lineup include Patrick Reed, winner of the 2018 Masters, and top-50 ranked golfers Harris English, Tony Finau, Victor Hovland and Gary Woodland .
Local products set to hit the links include Charley Hoffman, from Poway High, Jamie Lovemark and Pat Perez, both from Torrey Pines High, Kyle Mendoza, of Oceanside, and Xander Schauffele and J.J. Spaun, both from San Diego State.
Superstar Tiger Woods though, will not appear. Golf Digest.com reported this week that he will be out for at least two months due to back surgery. Woods finished tied for ninth at last year’s Open.
The Farmers Insurance Open begins Thursday and continues through Jan. 31. Fans will not be admitted to the event due to COVID-19.
