The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has canceled Thursday’s races because of concerns for horse safety with rain in the forecast.
Officials announced the suspension out of caution for horse and jockey safety as the rain is likely to make both the dirt and grass tracks unsuitable for racing.
The organization’s officials consulted with the California Horse Racing Board and the Thoroughbred Owners of California before making the decision.
“We know this is unusual for Del Mar but equine and rider safety is always our primary concern,” said Tom Robbins, the club’s vice president for racing. “We’ll make a call next week as to whether or not we’ll have training on Wednesday and Thursday.”
The National Weather Service office in San Diego is forecasting rain beginning Tuesday night and ending by Thursday night.
According to the the club, races are still scheduled for Friday through Sunday, with first posts at 12:30 p.m.
