The San Diego State offense stood out at the campus’ annual preseason scrimmage at SDCCU Stadium Saturday.

The team played at Fan Fest, two weeks ahead of their season opener at home Aug. 31.

The offense totaled 478 yards, 230 of which came on the ground from eight rushers. Freshmen Zidane Thomas and Justin Dinka led the team.

“You want as many (running backs) out here getting reps as possible,” said quarterback Ryan Agnew, who was under center for three possessions in the first half. “…When we watch it on film there will be a lot of things we can work on but it was awesome to get in this environment and see everyone do well.”

Freshman Matt Araiza hit field goals of 43, 33 and 39 yards.

Junior quarterback Jordon Brookshire, who went 13-for-21 for 123 yards, took over early in the second quarter. He guided the offense on a 12-play, 62-yard drive that resulted in the scrimmage’s first touchdown.

Kaegun Williams punched the ball in from 2-yards out and was responsible for the final 36 yards of the drive, which included a 22-yard run and a 12-yard reception.

The defense stepped up in the second half. Senior safety Kyree Woods forced a fumble, recovered the ball and ran 45 yards to score.

Dinka thrilled the crowd on the next drive. He had a 1-yard run on the opening play, then went around the left end on the next play for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Junior safety Dwayne Johnson Jr., freshman safety Allan Mwata and freshman linebacker Michael Shawcroft led the defense with eight tackles. Woods had six tackles, including one for a loss of three yards.
