No less a beer authority than Kevin Youkilis has called out San Diego for its beer supremacy.

He knows whereof he speaks. The retired Boston Red Sox infielder now owns a brewery in Silicon Valley, according to Sports Illustrated. He also, incidentally, goes by the Twitter handle @GreekGodofHops.

According to the report, when Youkilis traveled with the Red Sox he enjoyed particular breweries in Kansas City, Tampa and Minneapolis, but when San Diego came up, he couldn’t just pick one.

“If you got to play in San Diego,” he told the magazine, “that was always a great trip.”

Youkilis, who retired in 2014 after winning World Series with the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox teams, owns Loma Brewing Co. in Los Gatos. His travels, he told the magazine, gave him a knowledge base about beer, and after he tapped associates and experts, they began to work on Loma brews.

Their labors have paid off. Two years ago, the California State Fair named Loma “Commercial Brewery of the Year.” In 2017 and 2018, Loma also was awarded first- and second-place honors for beer varieties at the fair.
