UC San Diego junior right-hander Brandon Weed, a local product out of Lemon Grove, was named Wednesday as the Division II West Region Pitcher of the Year.

Overall, the UCSD baseball program had four players selected for the Division II All-West Region teams, named by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.

Weed, also the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Most Valuable Pitcher, was joined on the All-West Region First Team by CCAA Most Valuable Player Shay Whitcomb, a sophomore shortstop.

Other honorees, redshirt sophomore catcher Aaron Kim and senior left-hander Preston Mott, made the second team.

Weed is 9-1 with a 1.95 ERA, the team’s only complete game, 48 strikeouts and 10 walks in 69.1 innings. He attended Grossmont High School and Southwestern College before UCSD.

The Tritons were 13-0 over his first 13 appearances, the first four of which were relief outings before Weed earned a spot in the starting rotation.

Mott is 7-1 with a 2.80 ERA and 55 strikeouts. Kim is hitting .282 and is tied for second in the CCAA wit 11 home runs.

The CCAA regular-season champion Tritons (35-12) host the West Regional #2 of the 2019 NCAA Division II Championship, Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18, at Triton Ballpark.
