University of California San Diego clinched its first regular-season baseball title since 2012 Thursday, in a 21-2 rout of Cal State East Bay, in the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series.
The team improved to 32-10 overall and 27-10 in the league, as they are poised to open the CCAA Tournament in Stockton Wednesday. The defending tournament champs will enter the tournament as the top seed.
It’s a fifth regular-season title for the UCSD baseball program, and a return to top form after the Tritons earned four straight titles through 2012.
The victory also served as a milestone for UCSD head coach Eric Newman, now in his eighth season leading the team. He notched his 200th CCAA win.
The offensive stars included Keenan Brigman and freshman Ryan McNally, who each hit their first college home runs. Blake Baumgartner and junior Alex Athanacio, joined in the slug fest, adding long balls to the Triton onslaught.
