Isaiah Pineiro scored a game-high 28 points to lead Toreros a 76-57 win Friday over the Aggies at UC Davis, giving USD coach Sam Scholl his second win as head coach.
San Diego (2-0) started hot and kept on going. The Toreros were the first to score and went on a 14-2 run for an early lead. UC Davis got back into the game with a pair of free throws and kept the game interesting. At one point the Aggies were leading 26-25 off a steal and an uncontested layup by Joe Mooney.
That was the only time UC Davis (0-2) led in the entire game. On the next possession, Olin Carter III made a jumper with an assist by Pineiro to recapture the lead for the rest of the game.
In the second half, the Toreros kept the momentum going with a 19-9 run to stretch the lead to a six-point spread at 66-51 with six minutes left. Pineiro scored 17 of his 28 points, just one point shy of his career high, in the second half.
Carter III had 16 points and Isaiah Wright added 10 more for Toreros. The three had a combined six 3-pointers.
USD held UC Davis to 38 percent shooting. The Aggies made only three of their 23 attempts from the 3-point line. TJ Shorts II lead the Aggies with 17 points, followed by Joe Money with 13 points and Matt Neufeld with 11.
The Toreros, which had 18 assists as a team, limited the Aggies to one field goal on their last seven shots, preventing any attempt at a comeback.
The Toreros defense held the Aggies (0-2) to 38 percent shooting, including a 3-of-23 clip from 3-point range. TJ Shorts II led UCD with 17 points, followed by Joe Mooney with 13. USD prevented any potential comeback effort by limiting the Aggies to one field goal on their final seven shots.
USD next heads to Washington to battle the Huskies at 8 p.m. Monday.
