Record-setting former University of San Diego defensive end Jonathan Petersen was among 19 players whose signings were announced Thursday by the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football.

Petersen made a Football Championship Subdivision-record 44 quarterback sacks in his four seasons with the Toreros, which concluded in 2017.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 240-pound Petersen is the only USD football player to be a four-time first-team All-American selection.

Other signings announced Thursday included running back Terrell Watson and receiver Nelson Spruce

Watson played 10 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017 and one for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016 following a collegiate career at Azusa Pacific, where he set every school rushing record.

Spruce was undrafted out of Colorado but survived the Los Angeles Rams final cut in 2016. He was inactive the first nine weeks of the season and then placed on injured reserve. He has not played in an NFL game.

The other signings announced Thursday were linebacker Al-Rasheed Benton, receivers Wayne Capers, Jevon Floyd, Jordon Gandy, LaQuvionte Gonzalez and Gary McKnight; defensive tackles Derrick Dixon, Jose Duncan, Michael Hill, Andrew Stelter and Aniela Tupou; defensive backs Marvin Gross, Tyree Holder and Justin Williams; running back Paul James; and guard Jerron Searles.

The signings increase San Diego’s roster to 49 players.

The Fleet has the first right to sign players from San Diego State, USD, USC, Stanford, Washington, Colorado and nine other universities.

The league is set to begin play Feb. 9.
