Carlsbad-raised Shaun White has captured a gold medal in the men’s halfpipe final at Phoenix Snow Park in the Pyeongchang Olymipics.

News of the 31-year-old snowboarder’s victory came shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday (local time).

White, who trailed Ayumu Hirano of Japan through two runs, turned in a winning score of 97.75. Hirano claimed silver and Australia’s Scotty James took the bronze medal.

The win gives White his third Olympic gold medal and the United States it’s 100th overall gold in Winter Games.

Also known as a skateboarder who was mentored in his youth by legend Tony Hawk, White holds the record for the most X-Games gold medals and has won 10 ESPY Awards.
