Four Los Angeles Chargers were named to the 2018 Pro-Bowl on Tuesday, the NFL announced. That’s the most players going to the annual all-star showcase since 2012.
Joey Bosa, Philip Rivers, Keenan Allen and Casey Hayward will represent the AFC. This will be Bosa and Allen’s Pro-Bowl debut. Rivers selected seven times and Hayward twice.
“It’s always an honor to be selected,” Rivers said. “Knowing that opposing coaches and players vote you in, it’s meaningful.”
The Bolt’s four players tied for the second most in the AFC behind the Pittsburgh Steelers. Four other Chargers were also named as alternates — Melvin Ingram, Melvin Gordon, Russell Okung and Corey Liuget.
The Pro-Bowl will be played on Jan. 28, 2018 in Orlando, Florida.
Fourth Time’s the Charm?
For the fourth time this season, the Los Angeles Chargers made a change at kicker. The team announced Monday it is claiming Nick Rose off waivers from the Washington Redskins.
Travis Coons, who made seven of eight field-goal attempts over three games for the Bolts but missed an extra point attempt Saturday in the loss to Kansas City Chiefs, was waived to make room for Rose. A rookie from Texas, Rose played in eight games this season for Washington, making 10 of 11 attempts. His lone miss was a blocked kick.
“I thought Travis did some good things,” coach Anthony Lynn said. “(Saturday) night he did miss an extra point, but I thought his leg strength was a little short on the kickoffs leg-strength wise. When Nick became available, we wanted to take a look at him. We’re looking for a kicker we can keep around here for a few years.”
Lynn said he liked what Rose did at Washington. Rose is the fourth full-time kicker for the Chargers after Younghoe Koo and the injured Nick Novak and Coons.
Injury report
The team also announced Tuesday that tight end Hunter Henry was placed on injured reserve because of a small laceration on his kidney. Brett Boyko, who spent most of the past two seasons on the practice squad, was promoted to the active roster in Henry’s place. Henry was injured early in the fourth quarter Saturday in the game against Kansas City.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pound end finished his second season with the Bolts with 45 receptions for 611 and four touchdowns. He currently tied for second with Gordon in touchdown catches.
