Despite a late three-pointer to send the game into overtime, the Universtiy of San Diego men’s basketball team still fell to North Texas, 86-83, Saturday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

North Texas (7-5) was leading  77-74 with 18 seconds left regulation when Olin Carter III sank a long one to tie the game, 77-77. In overtime, the Mean Green outshot the Toreros 9-to-6 for the win.

“Give credit to North Texas and their coaching staff,” Toreros coach Lamont Smith said. “I thought when Olin hit the three that sent us into overtime, that it breathed some new life into us. We just didn’t get the job done defensively tonight to get a win.”

The Toreros (8-3) had the momentum through the first 10 minutes of play and were leading 18-14 behind eight points were Isaiah Pineiro.  Cameron Neubauer and Carter III added a three-pointer each push to lead to 24-17. USD, however, faltered going into to the half allowing North Texas to take a 37-35 lead.

The Mean Green started the second half on fire and pushed their lead to 49-40. After a 13-5 run, San Diego cut the lead down by one point with 10:53 remaining. North Texas would maintain their lead until the last-minute three-pointer that tied the game up.
