Defending champion Jon Rahm, fan favorite Phil Mickelson and 2017 PGA Rookie of the Year Xander Schauffele are among the golfers making early commitments to next month’s Farmers Insurance Open, tournament officials announced Thursday.

Rahm, from Spain, won the tournament in January with an eagle on the final hole and is now ranked fifth in the world. Mickelson, a longtime San Diegan, has won the event at Torrey Pines three times.

Schauffele, who attended Scripps Ranch High School and San Diego State University, failed to make the cut in the previous Farmers but got hot late in the season and won the Tour Championship.

Other top players to give the Farmers tournament an early commitment are Hideki Matsuyama, ranked fourth in the world, Rickie Fowler, ranked seventh, and Brandt Snedeker, who won at Torrey Pines in 2012 and 2016.

Charley Hoffman and J.J. Spaun are among other entrants with San Diego ties.

Tiger Woods, a frequent victor at Torrey Pines, has not announced his intentions for next month’s edition. He began a comeback from serious back problems at the beginning of this month and tweeted last week that he was “gearing up for an even better … stronger 2018.”

The tournament is scheduled for Jan. 25-28.
