A Padres’ fan favorite, successful San Diego State football coach and a gold medal-winning sailor will be inducted into the Breitbard Hall of Fame in February, the San Diego Hall of Champions announced Friday.
The honorees are Garry Templeton, Padres shortstop from 1982-1991; Claude Gilbert, who led the Aztecs from 1973-1980; and Robbie Haines, who won Olympic gold in 1984.
Templeton batted .252 in his 10 seasons in San Diego and was a fixture in the infield, logging more than 140 games played in seven of those years. He was a leader of the 1984 club that went to the World Series, and was an All- Star the next season.
The San Marcos resident has since become a regular on the golf course, playing in celebrity and smaller professional tournaments.
Gilbert succeeded the legendary Don Coryell at the helm of the Aztecs and posted six winning seasons in eight years, twice finishing ranked in the polls. His record at SDSU was 61-26-2.
He also coached at San Jose State for six seasons.
Haines was a seven-time world champion in four different sailing classes. The graduate of Coronado High School and SDSU is still active in local sailing circles.
They’re scheduled for induction at the 72nd annual Salute to the Champions dinner. The date was not announced.
The Hall of Champions recently turned over its Balboa Park location to the organizers of Comic-Con International, and has reopened in Petco Park.
