Life Time Tri San Diego said it would stage the races starting at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15.
The event succeeds one known as Esprit de She (after being called SheRox), a women-only event.
“As we bring the Life Time Tri brand to life in San Diego, it’s also important that we honor the six-year history of this incredible event,” said Alexa Strobridge of Life Time Tri.
“We will continue to provide the same, female-only wave starts and non-competitive opportunities for which the original event became famous, while opening the race to all genders so everyone can enjoy the famous course.”
She said a special legacy program will remain intact as well, celebrating those who have raced each year since its 2011 inception.
Scott Hutmacher, Life Time Tri Senior Brand Manager, said he hopes the series grows participation in triathlon.
“Our short course triathlon races are ideal for new and veteran athletes,” he said. “The shortest [is] a super sprint, which is a fantastic, manageable distance to engage new triathletes.”
Also offered is a mixed relay event, which will make its Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
The Ironman Triathlon legs are a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bicycle ride and a 26.2-mile run. The Olympic distances are a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10K (6.2-mile) run.
The Life Time Tri lineup:
- Super Sprint Triathlon: a .24-mile swim, 6.35-mile bike and 1.65-mile run
- Sprint Triathlon: a .46-mile swim, 12.06-mile bike and 3.08-mile run
- Mixed Relay: Four competitors with each completing the super sprint course, a .24-mile swim, 6.35-mile bike and 1.65-mile run
The mixed relay event is said to be the first of its kind in Southern California.
Olympic teams will comprised two men and two women, but Life Time Tri San Diego will offer three team categories: traditional mixed, all male and all female.
Registration is priced from $70 to $175, with the cost varying per event type. Registration is limited to the first 1,000 participants.
