Longtime Poinsettia Bowl sponsor San Diego County Credit Union will step up to be title sponsor of the Holiday Bowl, game organizers and the financial institution announced Thursday.

The move comes about six weeks after the San Diego Bowl Game Association announced that it was folding the Poinsettia Bowl after a dozen years. SDCCU has supported Holiday Bowl events in the past, and sponsored the Holiday Bowl Parade in December.

Terms, such as the length of the deal, were not disclosed.

The Holiday Bowl had struggled to find a title sponsor recently, and was bailed out the past two years by a local firm, National Funding.

“I can’t think of a better alliance for San Diego’s premier sporting event,” said Marlee J. Ehrenfeld, the Holiday Bowl’s 2017 president.

“San Diego County Credit Union is recognized nationally as a remarkable financial institution and longtime community leader in the region,” Ehrenfeld said. “The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl will set the standard for innovative title sponsorships that elevate the entire bowl game experience.”

As part of the deal, SDCCU pledged to donate $1 from every ticket sold to Biz Kid$ to help teach kids about money and business. Launched in 2008 in partnership with the National Credit Union Foundation, Biz Kid$ is a financial literacy program focused on teaching youth how to use credit wisely and the importance of saving, budgeting, investing and giving back to their communities.

The 40th annual Holiday Bowl in December will feature teams from the Pac- 12 and Big Ten conferences. The date and time have not been announced.
