The Las Vegas Bowl has the first selection among Mountain West Conference teams and chose the Aztecs (10-3), who won the championship with a 27-24 victory over Wyoming on Saturday.
This will be San Diego State’s second appearance in the Las Vegas Bowl. The Aztecs lost 20-13 to North Carolina in the 1998 game.
This is the seventh consecutive season San Diego State will be making a bowl appearance, the longest streak in school history.
Houston (9-3) finished third in the American Athletic Conference’s West Division. The Cougars are 4-3 after a 5-0 start which included a season-opening 33-23 victory over Oklahoma, Sept. 3.
The Las Vegas Bowl was to include a team from the Pac-12 Conference, but they conference did not have enough teams with the necessary six victories to provide a team for the game after fulfilling its other bowl commitments.
