The Padres have a unique plan for Catcher Christian Bethancourt this offseason: a pitcher/catcher/outfield hybrid utility player.
While it’s yet to see if he can find success while continuously bouncing between the three, there is some evidence to back up the possibility.
Bethancourt pitched twice in 2016, recording 1 2/3 scoreless innings. His fastball sits in the upper 90’s with a changeup that is apparently progressing rapidly.
The 25-year-old originally broke into the league in 2103 with Braves but was traded to the Padres before the start of last season.
