The San Diego Gulls started their second season at the Valley View Casino Center off well, defeating the Tuscon Roadrunners 5-3 Friday night.
Austin Laganiere led the way with two goals, while Corey Tropp, Michael Sgarbossa, Kalle Kosilla added a goal of their own as well. While they did relinquish two goals in the third quarter, goalkeeper Dustin Tokarski made 29 saves on the night. Overall, the Gulls outshot their opponents 43-42.
The Ducks’ AHL affiliate moved from Norfolk last year to form the new Pacific Division. Immediate success would follow as they managed a 39-23 record while recording the second most average attendance in the AHL.
They’ll take on Ontario tomorrow on Saturday for their second match of the season. The Kings AHL affiliate eliminated the Gulls in the playoffs last year.
