The San Diego Padres will honor Dr. Laura Goetz of Scripps Health for her cancer-related research before Tuesday night’s interleague game against the Boston Red Sox at Petco Park.
Goetz is a general surgeon with expertise caring for patients with breast cancer, melanoma and other soft tissue cancers and general colorectal conditions. She spends a quarter of her time with research, focusing on patients who are at high risk to develop cancer due to hereditary cancer syndromes or mutations in cancer pre-disposition genes.
Goetz will be the eighth “Biotech All Star” to be honored by the Padres this season.
The Padres will also honor the Rowland and Selinka families, who have both had a personal and significant brush with pediatric cancer in connection with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Major League Baseball has begun an effort involving all teams to raise awareness about childhood cancer, the leading cause of death by disease in children 15 and under in the U.S.
