The San Diego Padres traded veteran outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday afternoon.
Upton was expected to be dealt, as the Padres have spent the last week shopping him to several teams.
In return, the Padres received another young arm in 19-year-old Dominican right hander Hansel Rodriguez.
Rodriguez has been productive in rookie-level play, going 2-1 with a 3.016 era in 32.1 inning pitched.
It looked as if Upton was on his way to the Baltimore Orioles, before the Baltimore camp had a change of heart.
According to bleacher report’s Scott Miller, the Orioles were asking for the Padres to pay more of Upton’s contract than they wanted to pay.
The Padres eventually agreed to pay $5 million of Upton’s $22.5 million deal.
