Hoffman, formerly baseball’s all-time saves leader, now works as pitching coordinator for the Padres. Simmons, star of the Farmers Insurance television commercials, won an Academy Award for best supporting actor last year for the film “Whiplash.”

Other former players scheduled to take part at Petco Park are former Padres shortstop Ozzie Smith, ex-Padres relief pitcher Rollie Fingers and former outfielder Tim Raines. Smith and Fingers are both members of baseball’s Hall of Fame. Longtime Team USA soccer player Landon Donovan also is set to appear.

Other celebrities set to appear are actors Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Sterling K. Brown and Tyler Hoechlin; Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz; and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Nina Agdal.

More participants will be announced later.

The softball contest is one of several events leading up to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Petco Park on July 12. Tickets for All-Star Sunday, which includes the Legends event and the Futures Game of minor league stars, can be purchased at the official All-Star Game website at AllStarGame.com.
