The San Diego Gulls won in overtime for the third consecutive game, with Mike Sgarbossa scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over the host Ontario Reign on Saturday.
Sgarbossa knocked in a pass from Brandon Montour three minutes, 42 seconds into overtime, which under American Hockey League rules is played with three skaters per team, two fewer than normal, unless there is a penalty, when the penalized team must face an additional skater.
Ontario (34-14-4-1) was held without a shot in the overtime.
The Reign, the Los Angeles Kings AHL affiliate, tied the score with 12:15 left in regulation when Adrian Kempe intercepted an attempted clearing pass in front of the goal mouth and put a shot past Gulls goaltender Anton Khudobin for his ninth goal of the season.
The Gulls (31-20-2-2) opened the scoring 4:07 into the game when Nic Kerdiles deflected Montour’s slap shot past Ontario goaltender Peter Budaj for his 12th goal of the season.
The Gulls, the Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate, were awarded a penalty shot 18:41 into the first period. Budaj poke-checked Ondrej Kase’s attempt at a backhand deke.
Khudobin made 35 saves and is 10-1-1-1 in his last 13 starts. Budaj made 18 saves before a crowd announced at 9,491.
The Gulls killed off all four of the Reign’s power-play opportunities and were held scoreless on both their power plays.
The Gulls will resume action Wednesday, playing host to the San Antonio Rampage, the Colorado Avalanche’s AHL affiliate, at Valley View Casino Center.
