Chris Wagner scored in overtime as the San Diego Gulls overcame two two-goal deficits for a 6-5 victory over the Bakersfield Condors Friday night at Valley View Casino Center.
Wagner’s right wing shot three minutes 20 seconds into overtime deflected through Condors goaltender Niklas Lundstrom for his second goal of the night and fifth in his eight games with the Gulls, the Anaheim Ducks American Hockey League affiliate.
Wagner’s goal was the Gulls only shot during the overtime, which under AHL rules is played with three skaters per team, two fewer than normal, unless there is a penalty.
Gulls goaltender Anton Khudobin stopped all three of Bakersfield’s shots in overtime and 30 for the game.
The Gulls never led. Left wing Harry Zolnierczyk scored with 2:27 left in the second period, tying the score, 5-5.
The third period was scoreless as Khudobin made six saves and Lundstrom 12.
The Condors took a 3-1 lead 12:43 into the game on goals by Anton Slepyshev, Marc-Olivier Roy and Ryan Hamilton.
The Gulls cut the lead to 3-2 on defenseman Sean Theodore’s goal at 13:23 of the first period.
Bakersfield, the Edmonton Oilers AHL affiliate, regained a two-goal lead 43 seconds later on Jujhar Khaira’s goal.
Wagner scored the final goal of the seven-goal first period 1:27 before intermission.
Chris Muller’s power-play goal 54 seconds into the second period re-tied the score. The Condors reclaimed the lead on Tyler Pitlick’s goal 11:34 into the period.
Ondrej Kase scored the Gulls’ first goal 5:29 into the first period before a crowd announced at 11,168.
The Gulls also defeated Bakersfield in overtime Tuesday night in Bakersfield.
