The Univeristy of San Diego baseball team defeated San Diego State 9-6 on Thursday night in a warm-up contest for the upcoming Tony Gwynn Classic.

USD (1-3) used a flurry of two-out hits to beat the Aztecs (1-4) at the neutral site of Lake Elsinore, CA, where the Aztecs competed in the NCAA regionals in the 2015 season.

The Toreros used an early five-run lead and two ninth inning runs to hand the Aztecs a heartbreaking loss.

Each team opened the season by being swept by nationally ranked opponents, and SDSU logged its first win of the season at UC Irvine on Tuesday.

The Aztecs still have an 71-55-3 advantage in the longstanding series between the two San Diego teams, with the most recent win coming into this year being a 3-0 victory in USD’s Fowler Stadium in 2015.

SDSU may have the opportunity to take vengeance on the Toreros in the finals of the Tony Gwynn Classic this Sunday, as the two teams are on opposite sides of the tournament bracket.

If the teams faced off, it would be a home game for the Aztecs, as the finals will take place at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
