The San Diego Padres continued to stockpile bullpen arms Saturday by signing veteran right-hander Casey Janssen to a minor league deal.
Janssen had a 4.95 ERA in 48 appearances with the Washington Nationals last season.
He had pitched a bullpen in Mira Costa on Thursday and was offered a contract by the Padres on Friday, according to Padres.com
While it appears right-hander Fernando Rodney is the favorite to win the closer job, first-year manager Andy Green doesn’t want anything etched in stone just yet.
“Nothing is promised, nothing is guaranteed,” he said to Padres.com. “But he does have a very legitimate chance to factor into our bullpen.”
Janssen, 34, was born in Fountain Valley, and had a career-high 34 saves with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2013.
