The three-time Mountain West tournament champion SDSU baseball team opens its season on Friday with a three-game series against No. 17 Oregon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Aztecs tied with New Mexico to finish first in the conference in the coaches preseason poll, which came out last week.
The team lost a lot of talent to the 2015 MLB Draft, but returning will be sophomore outfielder Chase Calabuig, who was the only player on the team voted onto the all-MW Preseason Team.
SDSU did not place in the National College Baseball Writers Preseason Top 25 poll, but received votes along with cross-town rival University of San Diego.
Mark Martinez is back as the head coach for the team and received a five-year contract extension in the offseason.
Martinez has been with the team since 2005 and served as the associate head coach under the late Tony Gwynn.
First pitch for Friday’s opener vs. Oregon is set for 6 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Junior right-hander Marcus Reyes is expected to get the start.
