The San Diego Padres traded right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne to the Baltimore Orioles for minor-league right-hander J.C. Cosme Thursday.
Despaigne joined the Padres in 2014 and spent time as both a starter and a reliever. In 2014 he went 4-7 with a 3.36 ERA in 16 starts . However, in 2015, he accumulated a 5.80 ERA in 125 2/3 innings as both a starter and a reliever.
Cosme, 19, was not ranked in the Orioles’ top 30 prospects, according to Baseball America, and had a 4.59 ERA in 57 innings in rookie ball in 2015.
With pitchers like Colin Rea, Luis Perdomo, Robbie Erlin and Brandon Maurer competing for spots in the back end of the starting rotation, coupled with the high ERA from last season, it seemed that Despaigne no longer had a place on the roster.
