The San Diego Padres lost two regulars from last season when Justin Upton signed with the Detroit Tigers and Ian Kennedy signed with the Kansas City Royals during the offseason.

In the short term, Jon Jay looks to be a potential replacement in left field and reliever Brandon Maurer is reportedly heading to the starting rotation to help solidify the staff.

For the long term, the team picked up some extra picks in the 2016 MLB Draft to help stockpile a farm system that was depleted after general manager A.J. Preller’s flurry of trades.

The Padres have the No. 8 pick in the draft based on their finish last season, and will get two compensatory picks directly after the first round for the losses of Upton and Kennedy.

The team gets the draft picks for extending each player a qualifying offer earlier in the offseason.

All in all, the Padres will have six of the first 85 picks in the draft.
